SOFT POWER AND HARD POWER

SOFT POWER IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

WRITTEN BYMaher Shafeeq

There are two kinds of power being used to become powerful. These are hard power and soft power. But soft power is being considered more efficacious than hard power in these days.

Soft power is the ability to shape the preference of others through attractive behaviour and cultural power rather than military power or economic strength.

The growing shift in recent decades from hard power to the importance of soft power means that being liked by other nations and also help them to increase their influence in international affairs.

When soft power is used as a pivotal part of a country's diplomatic strategy, it pays rich reward and enables that country to build its trust and influence to promote its foreign policy goals effectively. it can be an indispensable tool to get cooperation from international community.therefore, the international standing of a country depends as much on soft power as a military and economic power.

PILLARS OF SOFT POWER

There are seven pillars of soft power and countries are ranked on the basis of their progress according to these pillars.these pillars are:

1-business and trade
2-governance
3-international relations
4-culture and heritage
5-media and communication
6-education and science
7-people and values

Any country can improve its rank and achieve its specific diplomatic goals through the matchless progress of any one of these pillars. In fact, soft power contributes to global peace and security.

Nowadays, China is improving its soft power by earning respect through its conduct. China has extended its help to 80 countries in the midst of ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Pakistan needs to step up its diplomatic game through soft power. soft power is conceived in a limited way by policymakers in Pakistan.

According to the"Global Soft Power Index 2020 report, Pakistan is among the bottom ten countries and ranks at 53 out of 60 countries. India is at 27, while Singapore is the top South Asian country at 20, drawing its soft Power through matchless progress of education and science which is one of the pillars of soft power. China ranks at five, while Japan at four.
In a nutshell, nation branding is essential.policy makers should identity and effectively consider our soft power resources.there is no reason why Pakistan should remain at the bottom of the Global Soft Power league.
